Archaeological Park of Helvia Ricina

Helvia Ricina

The archaeological area of Helvia Ricina is characterised by its Roman theatre built in brickwork in the early decades of the 1st century AD. The theatre has a diameter of 72 metres and a cavea with two tiers of seating, capable of accommodating around 2,000 spectators. Its stage scenery, adorned with columns and niches, probably housed statues. Over the centuries, the theatre underwent spoliation and restructuring and is today the main point of interest within the archaeological area.

In 1967, thanks to a report by the renowned sculptor Valeriano Trubbiani, 150 stone blocks were recovered from the bed of the Potenza river. These blocks, carved with decorations and inscriptions, made it possible to reconstruct at least six funerary monuments and to deepen the study of ancient society.
